Zaila McCalla Appointed ECJ Commissioner

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Governor-General His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen has appointed the Honourable Zaila McCalla to serve as Selected Commissioner on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), effective January 1, 2020.

 

Mrs. McCalla succeeds former Selected Commissioner and Chairman the Honourable Dorothy Pine-McLarty, who retired from the Commission effective December 31, 2019. The other selected members are Professor Alvin Wint, the Honourable Justice Karl Harrison and the Honourable Earl Jarrett.

 

Mrs. McCalla, a former Chief Justice, expressed delight at the opportunity to serve as a Commissioner. “…I will endeavour to give of my best and I am thankful for the confidence that has been reposed in me or in my ability to make a contribution in this area of national governance,” she said.

 

The Electoral Commission comprises nine members. There are: four Selected (independent) Commissioners, four Nominated Commissioners (two nominated on the advice of the Prime Minister and two on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition) and the Director of Elections.
