KINGSTON, JAMAICA – The May 2016 voters’ list was published on Tuesday, May 31 with a total of 1,849,012 registered electors. A total of 26, 259 new names have been added to the list while 1, 657 names were removed. This represents a net increase of 24, 600 over the 1,824,410 names on the previous list which was published on November 30, 2015.
The Constitution of Jamaica prescribes an upper and a lower limit for the number of registered electors in a constituency. This is calculated using the average number of electors on the voters’ list per constituency as the base. The upper limit is now at 44, 024 while the lower limit is 19, 566. There is no breach of the upper limit; however, Westmoreland Central is closest to the ceiling with 42, 533 electors. There are two constituencies in breach of the lower limit – St. Andrew North Eastern and Trelawny Southern. The recent Boundaries Review submitted to the Parliament on March 31, 2016, is aimed at correcting these constitutional breaches.
