ECJ & NIA to host island-wide public forums

KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Electoral Commission of Jamaica will on May 28 host the first of a series of public forums across the country to improve knowledge of the electoral process, urging greater participation.

The first of the forums, presented along with National Integrity Action (NIA), will be held at Montego  Bay  Community  College,  commencing at  5:30 pm.  Chairman of the Electoral Commission Dorothy Pine-McLarty says the series of meetings is aimed at engaging more Jamaicans on electoral issues that affect every citizen.

“We realise that there’s a lot people don’t know, and a lot of topics they want more information about, so we will be going out there to make sure people are better informed,” Pine-McLarty said.

Dubbed Respect Your Vote: Your right, your responsibility each forum will include brief presentations by ECJ Commissioners and NIA Executive Director Trevor Munroe, and a question and answer segment.

“Some of the issues we’ll be discussing are money in politics and the roles and functions of the ECJ,” Pine-McLarty said.

The ECJ is charged with conducting elections in Jamaica and NIA is a non-profit organisation focussed on combatting corruption and building integrity in governance.
