KINGSTON, Jamaica – The November 30, 2016 voters’ list was published on December 31, 2016 with a total of 1,870,245 registered electors. A total of 23,600 names have been added to the list while 2,367 names were removed. This represents a net increase of 21,233 over the 1,849,012 names on the previous list published on May 31, 2016.

The November 30 list was published 30 days later than scheduled due to the holding of the Local Government Elections on November 28, 2016.

The Constitution of Jamaica prescribes an upper and a lower limit for the number of registered electors in a constituency. This is calculated using the average number of electors on the voters’ list per constituency as the base. The upper limit is now at 44, 530 while the lower limit is 19, 791. There is no breach of the upper limit; however, Westmoreland Central is closest to the ceiling with 43, 135 electors. There are two constituencies in breach of the lower limit – St. Andrew North Eastern and Trelawny Southern. The Boundaries Review submitted to the Parliament on March 31, 2016 is aimed at correcting these constitutional breaches.

Expiration of Voters’ ID Cards
All current voters’ identification cards which bear an expiry date of 2017 are valid until December 31, 2017. The public will be notified shortly about the renewal process for these ID cards.

Voters’ Identification cards for newly registered electors added to the November 30 list are expected to become available by mid-January. Individuals may check the list for their names online at the ECJ’s website at www.ecj.com.jm.

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica is engaged in continuous registration of electors and publishes an updated voters’ list twice per year. The next voters’ list will be published on May 31, 2017. Persons intending to have their names added to that list should apply for registration at an EOJ constituency office by March 31, 2017.
